English

some St Mary's pupils We endorse the aims of the English Language Curriculum, with particiular emphasis on those aims which most address the very specific language needs of our deaf and hard of hearing pupils:

The acquisition of language is central to the child's personal development and is crucial for the development of the child's cognitive abilities. The primary focus for teachers throughout the child's time in Marian School and across all curriculur areas will be on encouraging all aspects of English language development - speech, lip-reading, sign language, listening skills, reading and writing.

  • To create foster and maintain the child's interest in expression and communication.
  • To develop confidence and competence in using English and to enable the child to express ideas, information, aspirations and emotions.
  • To foster the development of social and interpersonal skills.

some St Mary's pupils All primary classrooms are language-rich learning environments which support communication and language skills. Displays in classrooms and in corridors include relevant text from a range of curriculum areas. Experience charts are used very effectively to enable pupils to tell, sign and read personal experiences
